Brown banded cockroaches are a common household pest found in many parts of the world. They are similar in appearance to other cockroach species, but can be identified by the distinctive light brown bands on their wings.

Physical Description: Brown banded cockroaches are small and light brown in color, with two light brown bands running across their wings. They have six legs and two antennae, and are typically around 1/2 inch long as adults.

Brown banded cockroaches can be a major nuisance in homes and businesses, and can pose health risks to humans. They can trigger allergies and asthma attacks, and are known to carry disease-causing organisms. Brown banded cockroaches are also difficult to control due to their tendency to infest areas that are not typically associated with other cockroach species.

What happens if left ignored?
A Brown Banded Cockroach infestation will grow larger as the female continues to reproduce 14 times within her 130 – 315-day lifespan. Each egg capsule carrying an average of 10 to 18 eggs. As infestations grow, they can elicit allergies and increase chances of contamination.

Habitat
The Brown Banded Cockroach prefers dry warm conditions inside heated buildings. They are typically found higher up in bathroom and kitchen cupboards. They need warm temperatures for survival. The most common way that they get inside your home and business is in infested furniture, food products, and grocery items being brought in. Once inside they quickly find dark hiding places where they may spread to an entire structure as they travel throughout looking for nesting sites and food.

Behaviour
When Brown-banded cockroaches are disturbed the male usually takes defense while the female runs away. They prefer warm dry locations that are closer to the ceiling rather than the floor. The female will carry their egg capsule for 1 or 2 days than attach it to a protected surface generally under furniture or appliances. They are active at night and avoid the light making infestations harder to detect. The young reach maturity at about 160 days.

Diet
The Brown Banded Cockroach are omnivores and will eat whatever they can find, if they cannot find food, they will eat adhesive off stationary books, wallpaper paste, drapes, trash, and nylon stockings. They will also consume each other when food is scarce. They do not require as much moisture as other cockroaches allowing them to live further away from water sources.

Key tips for prevention
Best tip for prevention is taking a proactive approach to keeping Brown-banded cockroaches from getting in and having the ability to spread quickly throughout your business or home.

Take the time to inspect items such as used furniture and groceries before bringing them in. Sealing areas that can be used for harbourage or travel routes such as pipe chases, cupboards, countertops and broken tiles inside your kitchen and bathroom. Keeping a hospital clean environment by regularly vacuuming cupboards out and underneath appliances, keeping garbage in a sealed container and cleaning up spills immediately will help to prevent and rapidly knockdown roaches if you do have them.
